The Global Corporate Challenge 2010
The New Zealand Society of Hong Kong is joining the Global Corporate Challenge 2010! This is a fun-filled and interactive program to get people living a healthier lifestyle by walking 10,000 steps per day over 16 weeks (10,000 steps equates to about 6km walking). Here’s how it works:
Organisations must form teams of seven people to compete. Everyone who joins a team receives a starter pack containing a backpack, two pedometers for counting the number of steps taken and a welcome booklet. Each team member wears a pedometer every day and logs the actual number of steps they take on a website. As you enter your steps, the website takes you on a virtual journey around the world and you learn interesting facts about each destination, while receiving health and fitness tips, as you go. You can also track your team’s progress and see how they are going against other teams in your organisation and all the other teams around the world.
It’s fun and it’s very worthwhile. I joined the GCC in 2009 through my company. At the start of the challenge, I determined that my average daily steps was about 6,000 and initially I found achieving 10,000 steps per day was a bit of challenge. However I kept pushing myself and by the end of the 16 weeks, I had managed to increase my daily step count to an average of 16,000 steps (I achieved a total of just over 2 million steps). I lost 9 kilos in weight and I was feeling much fitter and healthier for it. I really enjoyed the challenge and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting a little more exercise in their lives!
The cost to join the GCC 2010 is US$99 per person. We need a minimum of 7 people to make up one team or multiples of seven for more teams. With multiple teams, you have the added motivation of beating the number of steps achieved by the other NZSHK teams. Once teams are registered, you will be sent your starter pack and instructions.
The GCC 2010 starts on 20th May. If you want to join, please send me, Travis Pittman at kiwi@nzshk.org, an email by 7th May 2010 so that the individuals and teams can be registered. Registration is open to NZSHK members and friends.
