NZ Society table at the iconic HK Rugby Sevens Long Lunch, an event that recognised Jonah Lomu.
Big thanks to the generous soul on the NZ Society table for providing the winning bid of $125,000 in the Hong Kong Rugby Union 香港欖球總會Charitable Trust Fund charity auction for the top prize of rare Jonah memorabilia. Big thanks also to Karl Te Nana - it was great to hang out with him. Both a respectful and fun afternoon, and a great day for NZ in HK!
NZ Society team in WAGS charity golf tournament 2015.
The NZ Society of HK successfully defended its title for the third year in a row in HK's biggest amateur golf tournament, the WAGS Annual Charity Day, by again placing 1st in the category of Most Unimaginative Team Name (equal with DBS Private Bank, Aberdeen Boat Club No. 1, and Aberdeen Boat Club No. 2). We did not however defend our title as the golf tournament winners - all part of the Society's strategy to ensure that, having won the golf tournament for the previous two years in a row, we are actually invited back next year.
Old Hong Kong: NZ Society Kowloon City Walking Tour with Jason Wordie
An interesting, informative and well attended walking tour, which provided a different perspective of HK. Kowloon Walled City, originally constructed in the 1820s, had degenerated into a notorious crime-ridden slum by the 1970s. The Walled City was finally cleared and demolished in the mid-1990s, and the new open space was transformed into a magnificent public park. Kowloon Walled City Park incorporates some of the nineteenth century Chinese Yamen (magistracy) buildings, as well as newly-constructed Soochow-style pavilions and ornamental ponds.
Stay posted for the NZ Society tour to Canton (Guangzhou) with Jason Wordie in April next year. This exciting two-night, two-day visit will introduce you to the fascinating city of Canton (Guangzhou), so near and accessible, and yet so different, enjoyable and unexplored by many Hong Kong residents. Tour details can be read here: Historic Canton - Guangzhou.
"I know Jason quite well and always enjoy his chat. Did a great couple of days with him up in Canton last year." Rod, NZ Society member.
