As seen in the Hong Kong media recently: "Discrimination against feeding mothers is still common, and even happened in a hospital trying to achieve Baby Friendly Hospital accreditation; mother uses incident to initiate dialogue about change"
See one of the articles in the SCMP here.
The NZ Society of HK was one of the first to raise the issue last year about breastfeeding attitudes & issues in HK and China, quite appropriately as NZ is home to the world's largest dairy exporter Fonterra - who incidentally are still not agreeing to support or participate in our breastfeeding in HK and China seminar coming after the summer holidays!
You might have read our articles last year: "What a hoot! The Society of NZ'ers in HK wades into the China breastfeeding debate" and "NZ Society Breastfeeding in HK & China Seminar - momentum builds...".
Now that Jamie Oliver has waded into the breastfeeding debate in the UK, the NZ Society is reviving our own seminar on the subject. We have approached La Leche League HK and will be inviting NZ dairy companies to participate so we may see how the different, but not necessarily conflicting, issues of breastfeeding benefits, milk powder sales, environmental & cultural perceptions, and education are best balanced.
We are looking for volunteers to assist with getting the seminar organized. If you would like to join and help organize or simple attend the seminar, please email to: firstname.lastname@example.org
